From local handicrafts at provincial Thai temple fairs, to Bangkok's world-class jewellers, to Singapore's modern mecca along Orchard road, Asia has something for every shopper. Here's a brief run-down on the most popular types of items and where to buy them, followed by a list of handy guides written just for shoppers.


Shopping in Thailand

Thailand is one of the best places in Asia for shopping and visitors will be spoilt for choice with the huge, glitzy shopping malls, department stores, small shops and bustling street markets. Both Bangkok and Chiang Mai have excellent night markets. Good buys include Thai silks and cottons, leather goods, batiks, silver and gold, pottery with celandine green glaze, precious and semiprecious stones (in particular rubies and sapphires are indigenous to Thailand), pearls, dolls, masks, painted umbrellas, lacquer ware, pewter ware, bamboo and wood artifacts and bronze ware. The weekend market at Chatuchuk in Bangkok is a regular cornucopia with hundreds of stalls stocking items ranging from genuine antiques to fighting fish. Tailor-made clothes are also good value and can be made in a matter of days, yet the standard is very high.


China Town
Bangkok's Chinatown or the other name Sumpeng is located on Yaowarat Road in Samphanthawong district. The Chinatown is an old business centre covering a large area around Yaowarat and Charoen Krung Roads. There are many small streets and alleys full of shops and vendors selling all types of goods to shopping. One of the best place to shopping in thailand.



Chatuchak Weekend Market
Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok is the largest market in Thailand, and largest of the world. Frequently called J.J., it covers over 35 acres (1.13 km?) and contains upwards of 15,000 stalls. It is estimated that the market receives between 200,000 and 300,000 visitors each day. Most stalls only open on Saturdays and Sundays. The market offers a wide variety of products including household items, clothing, Thai handicrafts, religious artifacts, collectibles, foods, and live animals.

Siam Paragon
Siam Paragon is a shopping mall in Bangkok, Thailand. It is one of the biggest shopping centers in Asia Opened on December 9, 2005, it includes a wide range of stores and restaurants as well as a multiplex movie theater (consisted of 15 large size theaters with one of the them having the biggest screen and seating capacity in Asia) and the Siam Ocean World (Underwater world) aquarium (the largest aquarium in South East Asia) and an exhibition hall and the Thai Art Gallery and also an opera concert hall. It also has a large bowling alley and karaoke center. It is a joint venture by Siam Piwat, the company that owns the adjacent Siam Center/Siam Discovery shopping malls, and The Mall Group, which also owns The Emporium. Siam Paragon has attracted large crowds since it opened, but financial results aren't reported by the privately held Siam Paragon Development.


Silom Road
Si Lom is a road in Bang Rak district, Bangkok, Thailand. It is a entertainment and shopping district in Thailand's capital, adjacent to Sathorn business district. This causes a heavy load of traffic not only during rush hours that is considered to be the most dense of the city.


Pantip Plaza
Pantip Plaza is an indoor IT shopping mall located on New Phetchaburi Road in Ratchathewi district, Bangkok, Thailand. The sale of counterfeit software and DVDs are some reasons behind this mall's success and notoriety. Pantip Plaza is open daily from 10 AM to 9 PM. The stores within the plaza are free to operate their own hours. However, by 7:30 PM to 8 PM, many of the stores are already closing down.

Beijing apm
Beijing apm Sun Dong An Plaza is a shopping mall and office building at Wangfujing, Beijing, China. It is a commercial property developed by Sun Hung Kai Properties. The building was built on the site of the old Dong'an Department Store and opened in 1998. In 2001, the building was voted as one of Beijing's Top 10 Great Buildings in the 1990s.




Grand Gateway Shanghai
Grand Gateway Shanghai is an office complex consisting of two skyscrapers in the Xujiahui area of Shanghai, China. The twin buildings were completed in 2005. Each tower is 262 m high and has 52 stories. Construction of the towers was halted in 1997 due to the Asian financial crisis and too much Shanghai office space. However, in 2002, construction recommenced and the tower was completed in 2005. The tower is the 71st tallest existing building in the world when measured up to the highest architectural point which is the top of the dome. The height of the roof is 224.9 metres. The Grand Gateway shopping mall is located at the base of the towers.


Plaza 66
Plaza 66 is an office complex in Shanghai, consisting of two skyscrapers. The tallest, Tower One, is 288 m high and was completed in 2001, while Tower 2 is 228 m high and was completed in 2006. The two towers are connected by a skybridge.

Tower One is currently the 3rd tallest skyscraper in Shanghai[1] and also the tallest building in the Puxi area. It is located at 1266 Nanjing Road West. The height of the building is 288 m (945 ft) and it has 66 floors. Work on the first tower was finished in 2001. The shorter tower, called Plaza 66 Tower 2, was completed in 2006.The project was developed by Hang Lung Properties of Hong Kong led by Ronnie Chan. The buildings were designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF) architects from New York. The lead designer for KPF was James von Klemperer and the manager in charge of the project was Paul Katz. The building got third most votes in the 2001 Emporis Skyscraper Award selection.

Shopping in Hong Kong

Shopping in Hong Kong have been categorized from "social activity" to a "serious sport". It is an important part of the culture and a way of life. Few cities in the world can rival the experience from an economic, business or social standpoint.

Hong Kong's culture is very much dominated by consumerism. In the early Colonial Hong Kong period, the territory served as a middleman that sold far more than it consumed. Goods were largely sold via mobile hawker units or independent shops, with the majority of trade, utilities, shipping and manufacturing handled by the Hongs. The establishment of banks and deposit institutions allowed people to accumulate savings, and expand their personal finance. With significant manufacturing outputs, the economy turned around in the 1960s, setting the mall trends in motion. One of the first recognized modern shopping centre was Ocean Terminal. Daimaru opened the flood gate of Japanese goods to Hong Kong in 1966. Deng Xiaoping's 1978 Open Door Policy also made Hong Kong the definitive gateway to China. The people's mindset then begin to change from buying necessity to buying luxury.

Bukit Panjang Plaza
Bukit Panjang Plaza is a shopping mall located near the Bukit Panjang LRT Station at Bukit Panjang in Singapore. It was founded by CapitaLand. Its convenient location makes it a popular destination for shoppers from all over Bukit Panjang. A LRT station and bus interchange just across the street makes it easy for people to access this mall.




Marina Square

Marina Square is a shopping mall in Singapore which opened in the late 1980s. It is part of the first building complex built on the reclaimed land at Marina Centre, and was the largest shopping mall in the country at the time. The complex also houses three hotels, which are The Oriental Singapore, Marina Mandarin Singapore and the Pan Pacific Singapore.In 2004, the mall started major renovation works which were completed in mid-2006. It now has 65,000 square metres (700,000 square feet) of retail space, which makes it one of Singapore's largest malls. It used to house an outdoor food court until 2004 when renovation began. Anchor tenants include John Little, Golden Village, Superbowl, Crocs, Exofficio , Marina Food Loft, and Center Stage (which houses a few restaurants). The mall also includes the first Carl's Jr. in Singapore. It has a wide range of food and beverage outlets.
